Racism, Colonialism, and Extraction in the Geosciences

During the spring 2021 semester, Meghana Ranganathan, Michaela Fendrock, Mara Freilich, Lyssa Freese, and I organized this seminar course under the umbrella of TIDE to explore and critically examine the past, present, and future of our field: geoscience. This seminar arose from a desire within our community to move beyond the standard "DEI reading group" curriculum. About 20 folks attended the seminar -- mostly graduate students, but also a few undergrads and postdocs. We met once a week to discuss articles, podcasts, book chapters, and videos. Our syllabus and discussion questions are linked here and we hope that other geoscientists will find these resources useful for developing a similar seminar or just for individual reading and reflection! We ran the course again in spring 2022 with a very similar syllabus. Syllabus (with discussion points) and reading list.
